39 Years with our Volunteer Fire Brigade

The brigade farewelled its longest-serving current member last month when Deputy Chief Ian Ford hung up his helmet after 39 years of service. Ian joined the Fire Service while working as a Park Ranger for the Auckland Regional Authority. Not only an active firefighter he rose through the ranks to become Waiatarua Brigade’s Chief in 1994. After 15 years as Chief, Ian stepped back taking on the role of Station Officer and then Deputy Chief until his retirement. His passion for the WVFB saw him very much involved in all the brigade’s fundraising activities and community events, Ian was one of the main drivers behind the building of the current Fire Station. Some locals may recall his hilarious character, Ivor Cheslenkov, in the Waiatarua Brigade’s plays that helped fund the additional space for the station’s social room.

Always one of the first to roll up a hose or do some dishes, we will miss your leadership at training and on the fire-ground, Ian.
