Our philosophy: Child-initiated, adult-supported play!
About Playcentre
Our strength as an organisation is that Playcentre support parents because they are the most important educator for their child.
We are unique as we are co-operatively organised with the support of free adult education as well as local Association and Federation level officers. We are government funded and reach all Education Review Office requirements.
Playcentre is a unique New Zealand organisation that benefits the whole family by learning together and placing value on culture and childhood experiences. We have been doing this for 60 years.
We encourage parents to regularly attend two or more sessions per week to participate in their child playing, learning and to help your child settle into the centre.
Waiatarua playcentre
Our playcentre is set in a beautiful bush and tranquil environment. We are a group of enthusiastic parents who cooperatively share in the early education of our children.
We enjoy fun activities that give our children experiences we might not partake in at home and help develop relationships with their peers and fellow parents. Many lifelong friendships for children and their families have developed from a time shared at our Playcentre.
Our age range for children is from 0 – 5 years.

About SPACE
SPACE is a year-long programme for parents and baby. Each week the group meets for play/music/reading with baby and a discussion topic relating to babies development. We have guest speakers deliver talks about specialist areas such as baby massage, sleep and water safety etc.
We also make some baby “crafts” such as plaster prints, embossed and/or footprints and many others. As baby grows more play areas are introduced until the session becomes all about learning through play. Where appropriate we ask for a donation of $3 to help cover some of the costs.
More information at space.org.nz.
There are many benefits to attending the SPACE programme for both you and baby.
- Contact with other parents in the local area with babies at a similar stage allows you to share ideas and concerns, gain tips and make friends.
- Baby has access to quality educational resources and ideas right from the start and this knowledge is shared in a simple easy to understand manner.
- Our facilitators are experienced early childhood educators and parents.
