We are the Waiatarua/Oratia/Henderson Valley Community Patrol (known as Waiatarua Community Patrol) a group of volunteers working in our community to help keep it safe and prevent crime.
The Waiatarua Community Patrol Charitable Trust is affiliated with CPNZ (Community Patrols of NZ) whose purpose is to empower communities to prevent crime and create safer environments through the utilisation of trained and equipped volunteer patrols.
Waiatarua patrol is responsible primarily for the Waiatarua, Oratia and Henderson Valley areas patrolling neighbourhoods and providing high visibility within the community. We patrol day and night, weekdays and weekends.
Our aim is to reduce the opportunity for criminal activity by acting as a deterrent through the visibility of our vehicle. We always patrol in pairs and login with Police District Communication Centre at the beginning and end of each patrol.
Volunteer patrollers give as many hours as their schedules allow (generally a flexible commitment of around 2 hours per month – or more if you have the time). Patrol groups have full backing from NZ Police (while remaining financially independent) and act as”eyes and ears” for the Police, gathering intel and reporting incidents.
All applicants (and age is no barrier) are vetted by Police, put through training and every member must sign a declaration of confidentiality and a code of conduct.
We have been operating since August 2013 and currently have two sign-written patrol vehicles and a team of 30 patrollers. Since our inception, we have completed over 600 patrols and completed over 3,500 volunteer hours. We have reported over 500 incidents to Police and Council including stolen vehicles, dumped rubbish, graffiti, and damaged property.
