The Winners of the 2025 Waiatarua Photographer of the Year Competition This year’s entries were the strongest we’ve ever seen, capturing everything from golden sunsets and native birds to quiet forest scenes and joyful garden moments. The competition not only showcased our local beauty but reminded us all just how creative and observant our neighbours truly are.
The winners are:
Landscape Category – Tracy Howarth Tracy’s breathtaking image of sun-light breaking through the native bush captured the essence of Waiatarua’s wild beauty.
Wildlife Category – Brian & Julie Cairns Their intimate shot of a ruru (morepork) taken right on their deck brought the wow factor – and a little bit of mystery.
Junior Category – Ivan Monk Ivan’s sunset reflection lit up the judges’ and community’s hearts. A beautifully composed image that shows how even young photographers can see the world with striking clarity and emotion.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who entered the competition, voted, or supported our local talent in any way. Events like this bring our community together and remind us of the special moments happening all around us – sometimes right outside our doors. Special thanks also go to our team of volunteers for helping coordinate everything behind the scenes.
Prizes will be sent out to winners shortly. Thank you for your patience as we work through this process. Until next year – keep your cameras close. Waiatarua is always ready to be rediscovered
